The 12-Point Google Business Profile Checklist for HVAC Contractors

A practical checklist to optimize your Google Business Profile for local HVAC search — covering categories, photos, services, and Q&A.

Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the single biggest local-SEO lever an HVAC contractor has. Done right, it puts you in the Map Pack — the block of three local businesses Google shows above organic results, where 76% of local searches click. Done wrong, you're invisible no matter how good your website looks.

This is the exact 12-point checklist we run for every HeatRank AI customer. Work through it in order. Most owners can finish in under 90 minutes.

1. Verify your listing

If you haven't claimed your profile yet, search your business name on Google Maps. Claim and verify (postcard, phone, or video). Without verification, none of the other steps matter.

2. Pick the correct primary category

Use "HVAC contractor" — not "Air conditioning repair service" or "Heating contractor" alone. The HVAC category covers both AC and heating, which matches how homeowners actually search.

3. Add 5 secondary categories

  • Air conditioning repair service
  • Heating contractor
  • Furnace repair service
  • Air conditioning system supplier
  • Heat pump supplier

4. Set your service area properly

Mark yourself as a Service Area Business (SAB) if you don't have a public storefront. Add every ZIP code you actually serve — not just your home base. Don't pad with cities you can't get to in under an hour; Google can detect this.

5. Match NAP everywhere

Your business Name, Address, and Phone (NAP) must match exactly on your GBP, your website, your Yelp, your BBB profile, and every other directory. "123 Main St." and "123 Main Street" are different strings to Google's algorithm.

6. Upload at least 30 photos

  • Trucks (with logo visible)
  • Crews on jobs (with PPE)
  • Recent installs (interior + exterior)
  • Logo and storefront if you have one
  • Equipment you sell (Trane, Carrier, Lennox)

7. Fill out every Service

Under "Services" add every type of work you do: AC repair, AC install, furnace repair, furnace install, heat pump service, ductwork, indoor air quality, maintenance plans. Each one is a chance to rank for a different keyword.

8. Add hours including emergency availability

If you offer 24/7 emergency service, set your hours to "Open 24 hours" — not "By appointment." Google rewards listings with explicit availability for emergency searches.

9. Set up Google Posts

Post at least once a week — a special offer, a recent install photo, a seasonal tune-up reminder. Posts expire after 7 days, so consistency matters. Active profiles outrank dormant ones.

10. Enable messaging

Turn on Google Business messaging. Reply within 30 minutes during business hours — Google shows a response-time badge that affects ranking.

11. Build review velocity

Aim for 2-4 new Google reviews per week. Send a review-request text or email to every customer 24 hours after the job is complete. Reply to every review within 24 hours — yes, even the 5-stars.

12. Answer your own Q&A

Customers can post questions on your GBP. They often go unanswered for weeks. Beat them to it: pre-populate the Q&A with the 5 most common HVAC questions (price ranges, financing, emergency availability, brands you carry, warranty) and answer them yourself.

What this looks like in 90 days

If you complete this checklist and stay consistent (photos, posts, reviews, Q&A), you should see your GBP move into the Map Pack for at least a handful of keywords within 60-90 days. From there, the snowball effect kicks in: more visibility means more calls means more reviews means more visibility.

HeatRank AI automates the parts that scale — review replies, rank tracking, keyword research — so you can focus on the things only you can do (photos, Q&A, choosing the right categories).
